Hosting your own web site: Wix and Weebly

Matt Stauffer

Wix and Weebly are two newer hosted content management systems which are very similar in the way you use them to create content. But they’re also different in a few key ways.

  • Wix
    • Wix is interactive, flashy, and not as much stuck in traditional web site structures as some of the other services we’ve looked at. It’s great for event web sites, but maybe not as solid for a long-term web site.
    • Pros
      • Much more space for variety and pizzazz than the non-Flash hosts.
      • Edit in place, including rotating and overlapping in ways other CMSes won’t let you.
    • Cons
      • All Flash means no iPad/iPhone, terrible search engine placement, and abandoning some Internet interaction conventions.
  • Weebly
    • Weebly is HTML-based (non-Flash), but unlike Google Sites and WordPress, it features drag-and-drop site creation.
    • Pros
      • Extremely simple to set up.
      • Drag-and-drop design.
      • Edit in place.
      • HTML, not Flash.
    • Cons
      • Less features than Google Sites and WordPress.

Both hosts have their uses, but I’d recommend you stay away from Flash-based web sites for anything other than one-off event web sites; they’re extremely limiting in a way that you don’t want to inflict on visitors to your campus ministry’s regular web site.
