Will an iPad Make You More Productive?

Google Survey of Tablet Use

These results are from a recent survey Google performed of how people used their tablet computers, the vast majority being iPads–source.

I’ve owned an iPad (version 1) for four months and can say that I’m a more efficient consumer of information, but not any more efficient at production or task completion.

There are two apps that I spend the majority (80%) of my time in:

Reeder: An RSS reader that syncs with my Google Reader account. It provides an in-app browser to easily view links and makes it very easy to share content I find interesting.

Twitter: A much better experience for me than on my mobile device (iPhone 4) or the desktop. Also features an in-app browser, which again makes it so much easier to consume links, as well as archive and share valuable content with my friends.

Bottom line: I spend less time “surfing” and more time “hunting” the web.

If you want to be productive on the iPad I strongly recommend an external keyboard. There’s simply no way to effectively type on the in-screen keyboard. But the survey shows that you will be happiest and most productive taking in information rather than sending it out on an iPad.
